... I scare myself. The total epiphany just hit me smack dab in the face the other day.
I was reading reviews for the movie Punk's Not Dead and they were talking about how punk has become such apart of popular culture, that educated punk rockers (more specifically, "the guy from Bad Religion") were being mentioned on T.V. sitcoms. In this particular case, the show was the Gilmore Girls--which, I'll fess up, was one of the few reasons for me to sit down in front of the television for an hour on Tuesdays. Being a fan of the show, I had never seen that; which seemed weird to me, since it would be something that I would undoubtedly notice.
... so, I of course looked it up on Google using the search terms, "gilmore girls, bad religion." Sure enough, I found a site with the quote from the episode:
"Zach: "No true rock 'n' roller goes to college!", Rory: "Mick Jagger went to the London School of Economics.", Zach: "What?", Rory: "Yeah, and, uh, Dexter Holland of The Offspring got his PhD in molecular biology at USC. Greg Ginn of Black Flag graduated from UCLA. The guy from Bad Religion got his masters in geology from UCLA, and he's working on his PhD in evolutionary biology at Cornell." (...) Zach: "Shut up, shut up, shut up. Weezer did not go to Harvard.", Brian: "Not the whole band, just the lead -" (indiepedia.de)
Okay, so my obsessive compulsive nature seems abaited, right?
Wrong...
As I am reading the quote, I can't help but think of the following:
"You know... Dexter Holland actually stopped a year before getting his degree in molecular biology..."
And then, of course there's also Blake Schwarzenbach from Jawbreaker who teaches college level English in New York; Milo Aukerman from the Descendents has a PhD in Chemistry from UCSD; Brian May from Queen is working on his PhD in Astronomy; Chris Bauermeister (again from Jawbreaker) who at the last time I checked was working on his PhD thesis in History at Purdue University; I know Jeff Rosenstock from Bomb the Music Industry! and the Arrogant Sons of Bitches has not dropping out of college in the song "Syke! Life is Awesome!"...
So, what have we learned today?
I am a music geek, and am obsessive compulsive. Hooray for me...
At least the punchline was funny.
