So, awhile ago, I was thinking about a conversation I had with my little brother. My little brother, is a total Iron Maiden fanatic. It's all he listens to (well, that and the RENT soundtrack. Ecclectic, I know.) and it's all he knows. I asked him if they were his favorite band, and he (of course) said yes. But, he floored me--being the bum that he is--by asking what mine was. It seems like a simple concept, right? Nope. I listen to everything; I like hip-hop, mindless pop, classic rock, some heavy metal, punk, country, indie... the list goes on and on. There are so many genres and artists and bands that I listen to and avidly like, that to pick only one as an overall favorite, is next to impossible. And it doesn't help to go on different phases or kicks, and obsess over one band or another for an indefinite amount of time. So, ordinarily, I don't even consider it, and say my typical cop-out answer when asked: it always changes... But, this time around I actually thought about what a "favorite band" would be. For me, it has to have, really, one specific characteristic: I can listen to the music at any given time. When there's nothing else to listen to, well, just put one of their Cd's and be perfectly happy. It doesn't matter what "phase" thing I'm experiencing; it can, and will endure them all. That said, there is only one band that does that: Green Day. I've always liked their ability to craft a song, and I know that when there's nothing on the radio; when there's nothing on my MP3 player; and when I'm tired of everything else, I can put Warning in my Cd player and be completely happy (that album is so damn good.) Additionally, Green Day was also the band that really got me interested in music in the first place, so I guess it's nice to come around full circle. Ah... bliss in the starting point. At least it sounds good.
