The Concert for Diana was on TV pretty much all day on Sunday. And I'll admit it, I sat there and I watched it. Of course during certain performances (Harry & William really do have horrible taste in music) I got up from the couch, but it stayed on the whole time. This might sound odd to some, but even though 70% of the music was horrid, the idea of the concert itself touched me. What a way to celebrate what would be your mom's 46th birthday, right?
Now the reason I have a weird connection with this is because well, my mother was always a big Royals "fan", I guess would be the word, especially Diana. She read the books, read the tabloids, watched the television programs. Sometimes I wonder if she was secretly pleased that Prince Harry and I share the same birthday lol. The famous quotes always are, "Do you remember where you were when Kennedy was shot?" or "on September 11th?" I can tell you exactly where I was and what was happening when I heard that Diana died (almost a year after my own mother). I was in the back at Domino's, prepping vegetables, but that's beside the point. So to me, this concert was a beautiful tribute to not just William and Harry's mom, but to my mom, too.
A few tidbits that I have to share from the 6-hour event:
- William is what is called in politically correct terms "overly Caucasian." Dude can't dance! Harry, on the other hand, probably thinks he's too cool for school and wasn't seen doing much except for clapping along to the music.
- The forever legendary Duran Duran dedicating "Wild Boys" to the Princes = priceless.
- Fergie dedicating "Big Girls Don't Cry" to Diana = I don't get it.
- I've always wondered if I would enjoy the ballet, just never had a chance to really watch it. Thanks to the excerpt from Swan Lake by the English National Ballet, I can now say with much certainty that ballet is definitely not my thing.
- I might not like Joss Stone's music all that much, but she's got some wicked style.
- Kanye West singing "Gold Digger" was…inappropriate. I wasn't paying attention, but hopefully he didn't dedicate THAT one to Diana!
- I've never understood the hype of Josh Groban. Girls think he's lovely. I didn't get it. All it took was to hear him sing one of my favorite Phantom of the Opera songs and OK, now I get it.
- P. Diddy sang the "Every Step You Take" remake…. what is it, "I'll Be Missing You," I think. That's all well and good and it's a good song considering he had the nerve to remake a Police song. But the performance was just kind of uncomfortable.
- Bryan Ferry reunited with Roxy Music singing "Slave to Love," = nuff said.
- Like I said earlier, Harry definitely thinks he's too cool for school because he wouldn't take part in the arms linked, crowd swaying that took place during aging British boy band Take That's "Back For Good," minus the always exciting Robbie Williams. William – all about the crowd swaying.
